Where
we are now
A group of people in Canberra interested in the idea of
cohousing first
met in mid-2000. We advertised the idea and others soon joined us.
Early in 2001, we became a subcommittee of the ACT branch of
Urban Ecology, which fitted well with our desire for an environmentally
sustainable development. In 2003, we incorporated independently as
Canberra Cohousing Association Inc.

Our vision and
objectives
Early on, our group developed this vision:
‘We share a genuine concern for the social and
natural
environment, which inspires us to work together to create a cohousing
community that many different people will call home.’
Our main objectives are to:
- build a cohousing
development of 15-30 houses in urban Canberra
- aim
for the highest practicable level of social and environmental
sustainability in housing
- develop a diverse,
tolerant, caring and supportive community.

Membership of Canberra
Cohousing is open to anyone and we are always
happy to welcome new members. We meet for a business meeting
once a month at a member’s house in Canberra, with a shared meal
beforehand. We have also formed three smaller working groups, which
meet as needed in between the main business meetings to work on
specific issues.
People who would like to follow our progress but not
become active members can opt to join the email list and receive our
newsletter, which comes out every couple of months.

At the moment, Canberra Cohousing is focusing on plans to
build our
first cohousing development in the north Canberra suburb of Gungahlin.
In May 2003, we were offered a large grant from the Department of
Disability, Housing and Community Services. This grant will be used to
fund the inclusion of six units for community housing within the first
cohousing development.
For more information on the latest developments with the
group, see the News page.
